With fresh exhibitions, new creative works and budding talent emerging on the scene, there is always something to see and do. This month we’re featuring classical concerts, fine dining and spiritual showcases – a stress-free selection to help settle back into the daily swing.

1. New Year's Eve Party

Fistral Beach Hotel & Spa, Newquay

Known for their laid-back vibes and epic parties, join the Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa to celebrate New Year’s Eve in an unforgettable way. Start early and grab a tipple in the Bay Bar if you wish, before heading to Dune Restaurant to tuck into sharing platters and festive dishes. Then, the party starts as the Bay Bar hosts the ultimate party with the perfect mix of live music and DJing as the incredible DJ and Sax duo takes centre stage, playing epic beats throughout the evening to welcome in 2019 with a bang.

2. New Year's Eve: Ding Dong A Go Go

This year The Acorn are excited to bring you 60’s & 70’s soul, Motown, disco, funk, Northern Soul, 60’s R&B & soulful house, on original vinyl for your partying pleasure! If you like uptempo soul music of all flavours this night is for you! From Sister Sledge to Sly & the Family Stone, Sugar Pie DeSanto to Spanky Wilson, they’ve got it all!

With a great line-up and something for everyone, it’s the recipe for a perfect New Year’s Eve party. Come prepared for dancing until the early hours.

3. New Year Concert

Tuesday 1st Jan, 2019
Truro Cathedral

In 2017 Truro Choral Society hoped to start a new tradition when they gave their first ever New Year’s Day concert. It proved so successful that it was decided to repeat the event every year and for 2019 they will present the following programme:

Vivaldi’s Gloria will open the concert followed by Vaughan Williams’ Tallis Fantasia. Another Gloria follows, this time by Poulenc, after which the orchestra will take you out of this world with Holst’s Jupiter and Mars from the Planets Suite. The concert will end appropriately with Russel Pascoe’s piece entitled “Music!” which celebrates the joys of singing.

4. Ben Waters

Friday 4th Jan, 2019
The Acorn, Penzance

Voted piano player of the year at the prestigious Boisdale awards, Ben Waters will be coming to The Acorn Theatre in Penzance on 4th January 2019.  It will be a real upbeat evening of authentic Boogie, Blues and Rock ‘n Roll. This guy has worked alongside some of the genre’s greatest legends (Chuck Berry; Jerry Lee Lewis; The Rolling Stones; Sir Ray Davies, Shakin’ Stevens and many more). Having performed recently in The Caribbean, The States, Canada, Venice, New Zealand, Argentina, Uruguay, Germany, France, Austria and Australia (Sydney Opera House no less!!) as well as playing in his Big Band at many prestigious venues in the UK he is looking forward to giving the New Year a big rockin’ welcome in Penzance!

5. Sheku Kanneh-Mason and Friends

St Endellion Church, Port Isaac

Celebrated cellist and BBC young musician of the year 2016, Sheku Kanneh-Mason, and friends, Ayla Sahin, Braimah Kanneh-Mason (violin), Alinka Rowe (viola) and Isata Kanneh-Mason (piano), have been enjoying making music together since their early teenage years. Currently all studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London, they are taking in St Endellion in advance of engagements at London’s King’s Place and Wigmore Hall. Their programme includes a Mozart string quartet, Faure’s mysterious piano trio played by The Kanneh-Mason Trio, followed by an all-time favourite: Dvorak’s piano quintet in A major.

6. 'The Window' Retrospective Vince Tutton Exhibition

Monday 7th Jan – Saturday 2nd March, 2019
Falmouth Art Gallery

This exhibition gathers together a wide range of some 60 works including drawings, collages, pastels, and mixed media paintings spanning a 60 year career by Vince Tutton (1943 – 2016). Vince Tutton was an internationally known artist who lived in Cornwall and made the Poltesco valley and Helston his base. He was a teacher and inspirer of other artists in many locations across the world but his own work had an intensity and emotional power, which reflected his inner thoughts and feelings. Vince was an immensely talented draughtsman and painter who developed a distinctive abstract style that interwove his life and art into chapters and stories.

7. Robin Hood & The Babes in the Wood

Wednesday 9th – Sunday 13th Jan, 2019
The Regal Theatre, Redruth

The evil Sheriff of Nottingham has hatched a plan to get rid of his niece and nephew, the babes in the wood, and claim their fortune. It’s down to Robin Hood to save the day and stop the Sheriff with a little help from his merry men and the babes’ nurse. Will Robin Hood unmask the wicked Sheriff as the villain of the piece? Will Robin and Maid Marion find true love and live happily ever after? Find out at the Regal’s annual pantomime packed full of song and dance, laughter and silliness; sumptuous costumes and scenery. A perfect new year treat for all the family.

8. IMS Prussia Cove: Sándor Végh Memorial

Friday 11th Jan, 2019
St John’s Hall, Penzance

IMS Prussia Cove are to bring an exciting orchestral performance of Beethoven and Mozart to Penzance. The concert, part of a special project in January 2019, will reunite a group of musicians who were all former students of legendary Hungarian violinist and IMS Prussia Cove’s co-founder Sándor Végh. In 1987 and 1989 a small string orchestra conducted by Sándor Végh recorded Beethoven’s Op. 131 Quartet and the Grosse Fuge. They have brought together as many of the original performers as possible for this memorial concert 30 years later. The concert in Penzance will begin a short tour, taking the musicians on to Bristol and London.

9. People's String Foundation

Calstock Arts, Callington

The People’s String Foundation is an army of bohemians and vagabonds hailing from the grass roots of British music culture, mixing World, Classical and urban styles in anarchic embroilment! This Cornish band is fronted by virtuoso violinist Ben Sutcliffe (Director of Music for Rogue Theatre, Kneehigh Theatre and Minack Theatre) with co-founder and composer Zaid Al-Rikabi at the core.

Ben and Zaid are packing their 32 piece orchestra into a suitcase and taking them on tour, playing live over a recorded projection of the full orchestra. Directed by Kneehigh Theatre’s Simon Harvey, this is sure to set your heart racing and your toes tapping – a great start to 2019!

10. Knightor Seasonal Feast

Knightor Winery, Trethurgy

Shrug off those winter blues at Knightor Winery for a delicious feast of seasonal specials. The chefs have crafted a menu full of local delicacies and a unique spin on classic winter warmers, adding a healthy twist to the comforting recipes you all know and love. Join them in the winery barn at 6:30pm for nibbles and drinks before the feast begins.

11. Bikelights: Flying Circus

Saturday 26th Jan, 2019
Wadebridge Town Centre

Now in its fifth year, this hugely successful community spectacle is expected to be bigger and better than ever – with 700 plus bikes and a host of newly commissioned artists bikes on the theme of Flying Circus – featuring elephants, flying trapeze, fire sculptures and magnificent illuminated creations of all shapes and sizes.

This is the most enormous fun, not only do you get to create brilliant illuminated bikes, but you also get to go on an unforgettable bike ride in the dark with your family, surrounded by the most enchanting glittering lights and laughter and it will be the most memorable night of the season.

12. Coppice Theatre: Science Adventures

Launceston Town Hall

In their top secret lab, the science fictionaries are trying to create the Ultimate Book of Science Stories! They are searching for the fizziest, flashiest, most marvellous science adventures, using experiments to make sure only the top tales make it into the Ultimate Book!

Using specially designed interactive technology, storytelling, puppets and music, this band of mad scientists have created a delightful show for children and families. Join them on their quest and get involved with some highly interactive storytelling!

13. The Healing Light Festival

Saturday 26th – Sunday 27th Jan, 2019
Heartlands, Redruth (Chi-An-Bobel Community Hall)

The Healing Light Festival showcases complementary holistic therapies and healing practices, together with readers, independent makers and spiritual artists. Visitors experience a unique shopping experience, offering gorgeous goodies such as sparkling healing crystals, jewellery, clothing, books, music, natural skincare, remedies for health and nutrition, and other handmade creations.

Holly Gambles

Holly joined the Cornwall 365 team in May 2018 as a Communications and Events Co-ordinator, after completing her management degree at Falmouth University.
